(Crafting is also rumored to be overhauled to not depend so heavily on companions.) So, what do you think happens to your companions while you're "on ice" and the Empire and Republic fall apart? Possibly returning as companions (or in lesser roles): Teeseven, Nadia, Bowdaar, Elara, Torian, Blizz.
Possibly returning as important NPCs: Forex, Kira, Scourge, Tharan*, Mako
Dead, hiding, or trivial NPCs: everyone else
Detailed predictions:
Smuggler Corso: gets himself killed. Romanced: gets himself killed looking for you. Bowdaar: goes missing, may reappear as an NPC or even a companion, as he's one of the few notable Wookiees in TOR. Life-debt status: hand-waved away. Risha: goes missing for good. Romanced: sends you a Dear John letter. Akavi: Mandalorian NPC. Doesn't join you. Guss: dies with my smuggler's hands wrapped around his neck in the first five minutes of the expansion. Hey, a guy can dream, right? Nariel Pridence: retconned into the naive-but-easily-seduced Jedi DPS companion she was always meant to be
Trooper Jorgan: KIA. Elara: resistance medic. Possible companion. Forex: either dies gloriously or is reprogrammed to fight for the bad guys (again). Dies for real during the story if so. Tanno: gone like the wind.
Consular Qyzen: dies honorably in a hunt. Tharan: goes missing. Holiday is much more likely to come back as a story NPC, because rogue AIs make TERRIFIC deus-ex-machinae. Zenith: possible defector to save some shred of Balmorran dignity, dead otherwise. Iresso: KIA. Looks like that Sith holocron in your brain wasn't made out of plot armor after all... Nadia: definitely an NPC, probable companion. Need some impressionable Jedi for the companion roster.
Agent Kaliyo: gone like the wind. Vector: probably rejoins the Kiliks and gets assimilated for good. Lokin: missing or died of old age. Temple: missing or KIA. SCORPIO: missing or KIA. Agents don't really inspire loyalty in their companions, do they...
Hunter Mako: teamed up with Holiday because "oh em gee Splicer Sisters is the best team name EVER!!!!!!!". Gault: died or defected, never heard from again. Torian: possible companion representing the Mandalorians, if he didn't get himself killed in the meantime. Blizz: definitely survived, definite companion possibility. Probably running an rocket launcher emporium on a planet with explosive gasses in the atmosphere. Skadge: gone like the wind. Don't pretend you'll miss him.
Inquisitor: Khem: dead. Bioware's not gonna spend a single moment fixing this mess. Andronikos: goes missing. Might show up as an NPC. Ashara: gets herself killed without your steady hand at the wheel. Confused Jedi make such easy victims. Talos: probable defector. Give this guy some ruins to explore and he'll work for anyone.
